Kindred Spirits

"... no man is useless while he has a friend."
- Robert Louis Stevenson

This weekend Matteo and his mama came to stay with us.
Matteo
Jonas and Matteo have known each other since they were four weeks old.  His mama (Lauren) and I met at a mom's group and a fast friendship was soon formed.  (as it happens, I met some of my dearest and closest friends at that mom's group, and Jonas met his dearest friends there too)  It was the kind of friendship that was solidified for us mamas over long walks to the park and play dates on rainy afternoons and conversations on the phone that included unimportant (in the grand scheme of things) but nevertheless all consuming discussions about sleep routines and baby poop color and sagging mama body parts.   Because we mamas were bonding so quickly, and because we lived a mere 6 blocks away, the boys had no choice but to like each other.

Matteo spent a few days with me and Jonas while his mama went to some classes on campus here in town.  He is a delightful  boy and as I oversaw them- playing with trucks and giggling on the couch and racing up and down the hallway- I made a secret wish deep down inside hoping that this would be one of those friendships that Jonas carries with him forever.
True friends are hard to find.  I know that in the very near future Jonas will acquire friends- some that I enjoy immensely and some that I'd rather he not spend his time with.  He'll meet someone at school and want to go to their house and I'll wonder whether the kid is a good influence or whether his parents are supervising their playtime well enough.  But I know that I'll never have to worry when Jonas is with Matteo.  He was born a gentleman to two gentle, intelligent, generous people and I would never question whether Jonas' safety or his character are being compromised with Matteo around.
What a gift.
Matteo and his mama left last night, and this morning Jonas rushed upstairs, eager to greet Matty and bang pots and pans with him on the kitchen floor.  My little man was confused and so very disappointed when he rushed into the guest bedroom only to find that Matteo was gone.
We miss you Matty, and we look forward to seeing you again soon!

  2. We miss you all to well my friend... Matteo has been very sad to live without that hallway, banister and staircase to attack on a daily basis with his good friend Jonas..!
I am so happy to have spent so much time with you, Jonas, Eric and your entire family.. The love is overwhelming and I see how much more wonderful you are in their presence..
What a gift to be close in proximity to everyone and see where you all live and play! Snow banks, frozen tractors, ducks, vacuumed mouth iron goats, sled rides and of course the warmth of a loving home.. It was so much fun to take all of Spokane in!.. I am so excited for our next trip!.. Stay tuned!!!
